I won’t go into the full details of our experience of care on a general hospital ward so many things were wrong including the way my husband was told he had cancer and it was terminal. He died less than two weeks later, we never got him home. I realised I had to hold them to account…for the sake of others who faced the same lack of compassion. A meeting with the health care professionals involved in my husband’s care was arranged to discuss the issues, they were in the defence but had to back down in the end. However it was necessary to escalate to ensure change happened and I met with the Trusts CEO…she walked into the room, took my hand and told me they had let us all down. They asked for my permission to use our experience for training on end of life care and ensure it truly put the patient and family at the centre. Combined with robust checks to ensure it was embedded.
It gave me and my family comfort, but for anyone going through it, please find your voice and stand firm. No matter how much our hospitals are under pressure, they should not fail those who are dealing with the impending end of a life
My son 47 was born with mild cerebral palsy, learning difficulties, and later epilepsy.
But he walked every where , was doing a lot for himself and was very happy.in end of March beginning April 2023:he started having pains in hips and back ,went to hospital they said muscular rub deep heat in. He was still having pain ,I got GP to make a referral for Physio ,I went with him for an assessment ,she said muscular but there was 3 months waiting list. I got a call from GP to get him to have another blood test as the last one showed his liver was elated . On the day he was going to have the blood test ,the pain was so bad he could not stand or get out of the bed. Got him to hospital, they said secondary bone cancer could not find primary . My beautiful son died on the 17th July 2023. They suspect it was Gastric , Metastasis (secondary Cancer) is the killer cancer which there is no cure from, but there is not much research into it . Once it has spread they can’t stop it.
I was just thinking after reading this again, you would have thought they would have felt the mass on his hip at the walk-in clinic he went to and when he went to assessment for a physio. The young doctor felt it when he went to a&e on the 25th April 2023
