Hi I’m not sure where to start and if this is the right place. My mum was diagnosed with secondary cancer on 13 February this year after having breast cancer on 2008 and then again in 2023. This was such a shock for us as she was advised after her last cancer no further treatment was needed as it was low risk. Also her GP was trying to say it was sciatica the pain in her back which started mid to late last year. She had one round of radiotherapy and was told by summer she’d be able to walk but we knew it wasn’t curable. Unfortunately she ended up really poorly and bed bound. My dad was then rushed into hospital on 31 March after collapsing at home and diagnosed with sepsis and advanced pancreatic Cancer. He was too poorly to operate on and we got told he had probably around 12 weeks. He was in hospital for 4 weeks with also in that time my mum was admitted and she was in for 2 weeks so I was visiting them both. I’m an only child so don’t have any siblings to rely on. My mum came out of hospital mid April and dad the following week. My mum sadly passed away on 28 April at home with my dad and I. I was caring for my dad and then on 8 May he collapsed again at home on his own which I feel so guilty about and then was moved to a hospice and died on 15 May, 17 days after my mum. I have days where I can’t do anything I just sit and cry and can’t believe I’ve lost them both in such a short time. I don’t know where to go from here.
Dear Lainy I am sorry to hear your pain. Losing you parents so close together like that must have been a terrible shock. My wife needed a lot of help to get over the loss of her mother. We eventually found a good therapist who helped her a lot. If you look around this site a little you will see that the death of a husband or wife as in my case, causes such trauma that it’s difficult to overcome and almost everyone would prefer not to carry on living on their own. People push forward for their children but with out their love next to them it’s as if the light has been removed. I’m only telling you this because for your parents going so close together was probably not a bad thing for them even if it has been difficult for you. My wife’s last breath was used to call out for her mother. I hope they are in each others arms now and I hope your parents are together in heaven too.
Wishing you all the strength you will need and sending hugs
Tom
