Lost everything in 3 weeks.

I lost my beloved mum 3 weeks ago now and I’ve just found out that I probably will be losing the family home that I’ve lived in all my life now.
I have lost both mum and dad, dad died 14 years ago to cancer and mum very recently as I mentioned. We lived in a council house in a gorgeous area from me being born. I’ve never met anyone that I moved out of the home for and now the council are saying that I have no right to stay in the only place that I’ve ever called home. I had to contact a homeless charity to help me and I’m still in limbo about what is happening.
I keep wondering how did this happen to me? Why did this happen? I just feel as though I can’t grieve the death of my mum because of all the things that are happening.
My family are just as upset by it all and that’s making me feel guilty in a way because I can’t stop the council doing this.
I have no idea who to turn to, I’ve been to my GPs 3 times now asking for help as I feel as though I’m having a breakdown. I just feel it might be easier to just give up.
Has anyone else been through this?

Hello @Shell9,

I’m sorry for the loss of your parents. It sounds like the situation with the house is making this all so much harder for you.

Is the charity you’re in touch with Shelter? They have an article on Succession Rights in council housing here which might be helpful for you:

Well done for recognising that you’re struggling and need help. It’s completely okay to feel overwhelmed by all these things. You are dealing with a lot and it’s understandable that sometimes it gets too much.

I want to reassure you that you’re never alone - there’s always someone out there to support you.

If you feel like you’re in crisis and need some extra support outside of the community, I would encourage you to reach out to one of these organisations below who can help you stay safe.

  • If these thoughts of suicide become overwhelming, please call 999 or contact your GP for an emergency appointment immediately.

  • Samaritans are available 24/7 to talk about anything that you are worried about in confidence. You can call them on 116 123.

  • Shout are contactable by text, 24/7. You can text REMEDY to 85258 and talk to them about anything.

  • You can also find your local NHS urgent mental health helpline.

We also offer free counselling if you feel some one-to-one support might help.

Please know that the community is always here for you too.

Take lots of care - keep reaching out,
Seaneen

Hi @Seaneen
I just wanted to say a big thank you for replying to me with advice, it really helped me. The homeless team managed to help me stay in my home, I signed the new tenancy agreement today. This whole community is an absolute lifeline to me, when I feel like nobody wants to know I can always come here so thank you.

Shell9,
Just read your post. I am so happy for you as was wondering how you were getting on.Its such a relief for you. Well done on getting through it all and it must have been do emotional but you kept strong. You can now remain in your home so that’s the main thing.
Thinking of you

@seychelles Hi Deborah,

Thank you of thinking of me and messaging me. I’m happy that I got to keep my family home but I’m still really struggling. The more time goes on, the more I miss speaking to mum.
I went back to work yesterday, that was so hard as everyone knew mum and some didn’t know mum had passed away so were asking how she was doing. When I got back home mum usually asks about my day over a cuppa and coming home to an empty house was heartbreaking for me.
I’ve realised that how traumatic her death was has really changed me too, not sure how to keep going.
Hope you’re doing ok?
Hugs,
Shell xx

Hi Shell9,
You have done so well today. Keep telling yourself that. Its not easy facing the world of work.
Yes i feel mum passing has changed me forever. I am going to try to be a kinder person as she was so kind. I am going to be selective with friends as she was too. I have learnt so much from her. I am going to strive to be so like her
