It seems there are problems in Canada and the Netherlands, so we need to be very careful.
This is nothing new, ‘helping people on their way’ has happened throughout all time, it has only been a recent development to have it policed as such. My grandmother had a very sick child in the 30’s and was given a bottle of morphine by the doctor to administer to her. It was accepted that your local physician would help out. And what about wartime where your friends would also ‘put you out of your misery’ if you were terribly wounded? Nobody was reprimanded for that. You’d be thankful. Whilst I agree there should be some sort of guidelines, I still am very much of the mind that it is your choice, and the government should have no say, nor should you be allowed to suffer in abject pain in the name of some deity which may, or may not be real.
I agree that this happened, and doctors still do it. I wouldn’t personally want anyone prosecuted for helping a loved one in this way. But this new law will radically change the whole nature and no doubt funding of medicine and end-of-life care, bringing so many risks to those who might not want their lives ended early. I hope I’m wrong about that, but genuinely doubt it.
Hi @HB63,
I hear your concern, … If anyone didn’t want to end their life early, despite being terminally ill, then that is still their choice, it’s not about pressing anyone. I’ll admit I hadn’t thought about it it terms of care funding for those that wanted to stay, but doctors & hospitals would still have a duty of care to those people no matter what.
I do wonder how many of us would say ‘Yes please’ given the option if we know we are terminal and that the pain is going to be horrendous. I know the human spirit to fight and live is so strong in some people, and those are the ones who should also be given the choice to say “No, not for me.” Again - it should be a personal choice. Like donating blood, at some point we should be able to sign something that says ‘in the event of no hope of recovery, please let me go’.
I worry about conveniently doing it.
Not what true wishes for reasons of not enough provision. Always heard conversations like haven’t enough staff
