I lost my Mum back in 2001. I was only 23 and she was only 51. Like any 23 year old I thought I was an adult and could cope. Looking back now that I’m approaching the age mum was, I certainly wasn’t and still struggle.
I’m lucky to have my amazing Dad, and he did everything he could to support my sister and I at a time when he was struggling so much himself.
At the time, bereavement counselling wasn’t something we were offered and I’m not sure I would have taken anyone up on the offer if it was. In hindsight I wish it was something I had done. I don’t know that it would make it hurt less, but may have helped.
Even 25 years later I still miss her terribly. I was lucky enough to find some old home videos recently and it was so good to see her and hear her voice again. I miss that voice so much.
I occasionally have very realistic dreams with mum in. In the latest one we were at a wedding and she came up and gave me a hug. It felt so real in the moment.
The anniversary of losing Mum is approaching again. It all’s always a tough day, but I try and remind myself that grief is a sign of how much I loved her.
Sorry, this is more of a rambling brain fart than a cohesive post. I just wanted to get it all out into the ether.
Thanks
