A 12 year catchup

Hello, I don’t know if anyone still remembers me but I used to be a mentor on the website after my husband of 50 years died 12 years ago.

I do know that quite a few of the lovely people I corresponded with have also died since they lost their partners so I thought I would pop on for a few minutes and try to find out if nthere are any of my old ‘friends’ still here.

It has been a long journey for me but I am at peace and am happy in my own way but I never, ever forget my late husband, he is always on my mind and I am lucky that our family still talk about him a lot in conversations and our two middle aged sons have even taken up his hobbies since he died and has become a regular occurence for them to spend week ends away a few times a year doing what my husband Peter used to do because when they were small children they were always with their dad at the weekends while I worked playing football, train spotting, train galas, car shows etc.

The first few years were hard and I honestly did not think I would survive them but slowly but surely I found myself living a different life to the one I had before. Becoming a person that started going out on her own, not because I was miserable, but because many of my friends around my age now 83 had died, moved into care homes, moved to live near their family and when homes sold near me and people who had lived here as long as we had also moved to live in a different area and many have now died. Younger people moved in with young children, even people I used to work with retired and moved away.

Even my own children moved away with their wives and children and as I don’t drive because of eye problems and thery are full time workers I only see them a few times a year at weekends but I am happy in the same home we have lived in since we married in 1967.

I do spend a lot of time thinking about the past and when I look in the mirror I think, oh my goodness, where has that pretty girl gone my husband fell in love with but I am so very grateful I am still fit and healthy, no aches or pains and still walk up and down the stairs without any problems. Our son and his family took me to a 50/60’s weekend last year and I had a cry because on the racks for sale hung dresses I wore in 1958 with all the net petticoats we used to wear under them. I looked at the 4 ins stiletto heeled shoes for sale we used to wear to go dancing at the Mecca, in fact I wore mine everywhere, work, going for walks with my boyfriend and technical college.

So, if anyone would like to reconnect or even remembers me from 12 years ago it would be lovely to read how you are doing,

Thank you.

Hi @Lonely4,

Thank you for coming back after such a long time. I’m so sorry for the loss of your husband of 50 years, 12 years ago. It sounds like it has been a long journey for you over all those years. While grief never really goes away, I’m glad to hear you’re feeling at peace. It sounds like you’re finding lots of ways to remember your husband through conversations and your two sons taking up his hobbies.

This is really poignant - thank you for sharing it with us :blue_heart:

Take good care,

Harriet

Dear Lonely I hope some of the people you used to know here get in contact. It’s such a shame how families move away in England. I have brothers and sisters with children across the world and it makes contact very difficult. It’s not easy to pop over to Canada or Australia. I’ve become isolated from my family for living in Spain for the last forty two years. I hope you find old friends here.
Thinking of you and sending hugs

Wishing you all the best Tom

@Lonely4 I was not here then, and do not remember you, but this is a brilliant, nostalgic post, and I hope you find some old friends. My husband died nine years ago, then my boyfriend in May 2026, why I am here, but I can relate, after so many years, a new life has formed! Best of luck to you :orange_heart::fallen_leaf::turkey: Cindy

Hi Harriet,

It is really good of you and everyone else who have taken the time to read and answer my post and it is really appreciated. I am still in contact, by email, with a few people that were on the forums 12 years ago but so many others have now passed away. We never got to meet as they all lived in different parts of the country but it is lovely to keep in touch with them.
