I lost dad almost a year ago he was 95 and been in and out of hospital for the few months before so it wasn’t unexpected but still a heartbreaking loss (I was a daddy’s girl) They lived an hour away and I went every week to visit mum and take her shopping (she was visually impaired) She had her 90th birthday in Feb and a week later she passed away suddenly in her sleep. It’s been very hard and felt I hadn’t even begun to grief fully for dad and then it’s a double whammy . I’m getting on with life but it’s those moments when suddenly something happens ,a memory, a song ,coming back from holiday and they don’t ring you to make sure you’re back safe . That’s when grief takes over and that vice grips round your heart and your eyes fill with tears . I think the trick is to accept that there will be good and bad days. You are functioning perfectly well then you’re not -roll with it . I don’t have a partner or children but thank goodness for friends and family
Hi @York60,
Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of both of your parents in a short space of time. It sounds like you were very close to both of them, and I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to lose your mum so unexpectedly when you’re still grieving your dad.
When you’re grieving, it’s completely normal to feel triggered by different things like songs, memories or the loss of a routine like your parents calling you when you’re back from holiday, and many members here will be able to relate.
You are not alone. I’m not sure if you’ve had a look through our Losing a parent category. But there you can connect with other members who are living with grief after losing a parent.
I’m sure someone will be along to offer their support to you. In the meantime, you might find these Sue Ryder resources helpful to read.
