Difficult relationship with Dad

My Dad died on 31 August, I had not spoken to him properly in 5 years. He messaged me a few days before to met up and I messaged him a few hours before he died and told him i loved him and said yes. I’m not sure if he saw it and it was a really complicated relationship. I’m a mess.

I’m sorry for your loss, grief is the worst pain.

Losing my wife has left me in pieces. I’m so sad and lost, she was lovely.

My dad was very abusive, I didn’t shed a tear when he died.

Hi Jess99

I am so sorry for your loss and where you where you find yourself now.

My partner died 4 months ago. I did not know it was possible to feel the way I have since then.

I also had a difficult relationship with my dad. It reached a point where we couldn’t be in the same room as each other. He died about 25 years ago. It wasn’t till after he died I came to realise how much I loved him, and how much he loved me.

I’m also a father to 2 now adult son’s. Love them to bits. And I know that they love me. But sadly we do not have the best relationship and I can go for long periods of time with no contact from them. I wish this wasn’t the case.

I’m going to speak more from my own experience now. I believe men, especially of a certain age, are incredibly bad at expressing how they feel. Get frustrated when they, or rather I, struggle to do so. A lifetime of the ‘man up’ mentality really not working for men. All this in some way making relationships difficult.

I’m not sure any of this helps. Or even if it makes any sense.

Hoping you find some peace.

Take care.
