Grieving before a loss

My 8 week old baby has been in hospital the last month fighting for his life. Today we have been told his condition is terminally ill and they don’t know how long he has. Me and my wife don’t know how to process what has happened and what support we can get to help.

Hello @Auslien, I am so sorry to hear that your baby son is terminally ill. It is completely understandable that you and your wife would be struggling to process such devastating news. You have mentioned that you don’t know what support you can get, so I wanted to share a few options with you.

  • The Rainbow Trust support families whose child is terminally ill. You can apply for support on their website.

  • Together for Short Lives have support on their website. They also have a helpline which you can call on 0808 8088 100.

  • Sands support anyone who has been affected by the death of a baby before, during or shortly after birth. They have a helpline on 0808 164 3332 or you can email helpline@sands.org.uk.

We also have a page on anticipatory grief , which is grieving the loss of a loved one while they are still alive. I hope it can help you to make some sense of what you might be experiencing.

Our community are here to support you too - please do keep reaching out, you’re not alone.

Take care,
Seaneen
