I lost my eldest son on November 8th 2024. Although he’d had recent kidney issues the post mortem gave cause of death as Ischaemic heart disease.
At no point in his hospital stays was the heart ever mentioned, so I have complained to the NHS and an investigation will be carried out.
I just wondered if anyone else has been in a similar situation.
Hello @Fjl, I’m so sorry about your son. I can see you’ve reached out to @Bonniemay on her thread here. You might also find this thread of interest:
Take care,
Seaneen
I lost my aunt at the end of January this year to cancer,
At the moment I’m really struggling with it all as we were only told at the end of November 2024 that she had incurable cancer, she lasted 10weeks, from diagnosis to when she passed away,
My issue is with her doctors surgery and the hospital were she was diagnosed,
My aunt has mental health problems and we had power of attorney of her health wise,
Well for a year we were going to her doctors about how she was in pain with her stomach back wasn’t feeling well they did blood test said b12 levels down we give u b12 injections and oh u have pulled a muscle get some deep heat cream got upset stomach oh that’s ur gluten free basically didn’t care even when diagnosed I was still arguing with them,
The hospital she was in well that’s another story, she went in originally from a routine blood test from the nurse at the doctors were I said to her that my aunt cheats and lungs were hurting her she somehow got a doctor to see her they called for an ambulance that didn’t show up went into a an e cos I drove them for the time I got back from taking my home she was in resus and I was told blood clots on both lungs they wanted to move her to a different hospital but no bed available in intensive care next day get called up as they caught something on the scan said they wanted to do biopsy to confirm cos it could be don’t know for definite.
Week later stil no biopsy done as she was being examined on the ward by the doctor regarding the blood clots I asked the doctor what’s happening with the biopsy of the liver to be told in a conversation like we already new they don’t know were the cancer has started from were I had stop the doctor right there and tell her we haven’t been told it’s cancer and take the doctor out into the corridor to carry on the conversation, finally they did the biopsy waiting for the results, whilst waiting on the results the doctor on the ward would not give my aunt her medication that she is on normally didn’t give her any medication to help with pain like morphine no specialist cancer doctor come saw her, they couldn’t provide any gluten free food for her kept trying to make her drink ensure drinks cos they’re Diatian said she is ok to drink them were she is also lactose so argue with them about that finally the biopsy results come in they tell my aunt on her own bare in mind we have power of attorney health for cos of her mental states mind which explains to them as I’m on 24 hour call for her when ever is in any hospital that she has secondary cancer in the liver do not know the primary cause and we’re sending you home today. Just like that my aunt phoned me asked if I was on my own and told me, then said please make sure ur home I have to have oxygen at home I said of course oxygen arrives at home, eventually they sort out transport for my aunt as she has to have oxygen to be brought back with by this time it 8pm my aunt in a mess I’m now with her at the hospital kicking up a fuss,
No care plan what so on the Monday I go back to the hospital to find out what was going I go to the McMillan support office they have their speaking to a lady there explaining to her what has been going on she looked up on the computer and found out they were only just that day discussing my aunt case that lunchtime,
I made complaint to pals about the doctor on the ward the ward it’s self which basically when the doctor called me back didn’t want to actually acknowledge she was wrong got the doctor above her to speak with me again saying my aunt had the mental capacity to understand and again I told him the same as I told her you haven’t spoken to my aunt we’re as ur colleague only spoke with my aunt for 5 minutes each day so don’t tell me u know what kind of state my aunt mind is and for the fact u should never tell anyone that kind of news on there own let alone a vulnerable person.
Then the same day the McMillan lady who works alongside the cancer doctor who had the meeting regarding my aunt phoned me to talk to me about how they wanted us to attend the appointment on Wednesday and how they have arranged for a camera to go in my aunt throat on the Tuesday, I was like ok tell me straight you have told me it’s secondary cancer of liver so that’s curable right she was like we will talk about all this on Wednesday I was like I’m struggling to get portable oxygen to get to this appointment on Wednesday let alone try and get to the appointment on Tuesday so now I want to be told straight I no my aunt well it’s in the liver so we probably won’t offer any kind of treatment as we don’t know if ur aunt will be strong enough for it, and as it’s incurable we don’t know were the primary is well I’m not letting u put a camera down her throat for u to find for ur own benefit if ur not gonna offer treatment,
Basically im struggling to get portable oxygen anyway to get to ur appointment on Wednesday all because we live in a different borough to this hospital and that’s pretty much what all of this comes to do postcode lottery. The treatment my aunt had received from the doctors and the hospital is unexpected and I am at the moment am to angry but will be taking it so much further when I get in the right headspace so any advice would be appreciated
Yes but with mum its a ongoing thing
I’m sorry you’re having all this trouble trying to do the best for your aunt.
I think the NHS is in crisis, not enough staff, probably having your work too long shifts.
From what I’ve already found out the hospital records are completely separate from the doctors surgery records so lack of communication about a patient must be a factor.
I’m waiting for my son’s hospital records so that I can see exactly what was said each time he was admitted.
I just get the impression that no one department talks to another so different health professionals say different things about the same patient.
Im in the process of putting a complaint in with the hospital for delayed diagnosis of cancer for my husband who died in November.
Ive put in a complaint with PALS and have a solicitor dealing with it.
