Last May my husband died abroad, the police/hospital and British embassy in Belgium said he’d lost control of his motorbike ending up in the path of an oncoming bike which hit him, he died of internal bleeding caused by the impact. No post mortem he was embalmed and brought home with a cause of death of the funeral director as long term health condition. Our corner said had to have a PM as no consistency in the paperwork.
Corner phones same day not a mark on him to internal injures he was not hit by a bike, no obvious cause need an investigation .
Fast forward to February 1st Belgium close their investigation concluding the accident was my husbands fault he lost control other bike hit him died of internal bleeding 3 weeks later PM report comes in cause of death is put as probability of pulmonary thromboembolism but again no evidence of nothing due to embalming.
So over a year on we still have to completely different reports one is obviously an assumption of a scene without any further investigation (Belgium) but because they filed that Stephen was at fault the other bikers involved have filed a civil claim
What the hell do I do to challenge Belgium, demand answers and explanations and stop a claim based on false information
I cant begin to imagine the additional stress and pain you must be going through, and have been going through for so long, with no answers!
I really have no experience of this other than a friend’s mum who passed away whilst on holiday, but could you try contacting your local MP? Theres also some advice on the .gov website that might help.
I’m so sorry for your loss
Hugs
I’ve done that tonight, the gov site is the one who says they won’t release anything in Belgium to anybody but a legal representative.
The communication and effort Belgium put in is minimal I waited 7 weeks for his belongings and if I hadn’t of got the British embassy in Brussels involved I’d probably still be waiting
Sorry to hear about your situation - difficult enough dealing with the fall out of partners passing without these types of complexities
Did you husband have any sort of life insurance or accidental death insurance?
Unfortunately not he was self employed and 52 you never think it will happen to you
Hard lesson learnt
