I lost my indoor cat

Hi my 11 year old indoor cat snuck out, she was not used to being outdoors at all but would sometimes sit on the step. No one noticed until the next day as she usually sleeps on the window sill. We spent a week looking for her, I stayed up all night for the first 2 nights, we asked neighbours posted over social media and put up posters, nothing. Then on Sunday I found her in the garden. I am heartbroken. She was not whole and I am haunted by the image of her. I had to pick her up before my kids woke up. We buried her in the garden. But I can’t unsee her and I feel so guilty that she got out.

Hello @Lilyboost,

I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your cat, especially if you had her for 11 years. I can imagine it must have been a shock to find her in the garden, and it sounds like you’re understandably struggling and heartbroken.

Thank you for reaching out. We have a support page about coping with the death of a pet on our Grief Guide which you may wish to read.

You may also want to get in touch with Blue Cross Pet Loss support. They have trained counsellors who can talk you through your loss. You can speak to them on the phone or online. Their helpline is 0800 096 6606 and it is open from 8.30am - 8.30pm every day. They also have a Facebook community which you may wish to join.

I hope you find the community to be a support to you and that you can reach out for more support, if you should want to.

Take good care - and remember that you are not alone,

Harriet
