Lost my Mum 4 days ago

Hi, I lost my mum 4 days ago, I moved in to care for her a year ago and wfh at the same time. I cannot stop crying, I can’t explain how I feel at all. Today seems the worse day so far, its dragging on and on. To see her deteriorate the last 2 months was so upsetting, she was so frail. I was so exhausted with turning her every 2 hours and keeping her mouth moist constantly, and not sleeping as I was listening out for her all night long, my body feels like it has given up.

Hi @Marie241,

Thank you for bravely reaching out. I’m so sorry to hear about your mum. You are not alone. I’m not sure if you’ve seen our Losing a parent category. But there you can connect with other members who are living with grief after losing a parent.

I’m sure someone will be along to offer their support to you. In the meantime, you might find these Sue Ryder resources helpful to read.

I hope you find the community to be a support to you. Take good care and keep reaching out :blue_heart:

Alex

Hi Marie,

I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my mother 2 weeks ago, it feels so raw. The fact your moved in to look after her must’ve brought a lot of joy to her, knowing she can rely on you. It’s never easy seeing your loved one like that. I hope you get through this and be kind to yourself. We’re all so broken and not sure how we’re meant to live the rest of our lives without our mothers but I just pray she’s in a better place and we will all be reunited with our families again one day

I’m so sorry for your loss xx
I lived with and cared for my mam for many years, and it is exhausting both emotionally and physically. I lost her in June of this year and it is still very raw for me. I still cry every day, and am struggling with day to day things. Going to do shopping is overwhelming and I get everything done quickly so I can get back home where I feel safer. Memories are in every room. I still speak to her every day. I still can’t believe she’s gone. I am an only child and had no outside help, so everything fell on me. I am lost because my whole life revolved around my mam and her needs. I didn’t go more than 30 minutes from home and had to make sure I was here to do meds 4 times a day. Watching her in her last days was devastating, but thankfully I was able to be with her when she passed. I can’t get that moment out of my head and still see it every time I close my eyes.
All I can say is to take your time and do things as you feel you can manage them. I don’t think you can explain or put into words the way you feel after losing your mother. It’s like a part of you is gone forever and you can never get it back. I’ve lost both of my parents now, and it’s a strange feeling to not have them around to ask for advice or share family history. It is very confronting I think, and if you reach a point where you feel you need some help, please make sure to ask for it x

I’m sorry to hear about your Mum. I lost mine three weeks ago today. She also deteriorated in the last few months, and very quick from the beginning of Aug. I take comfort from being able to care for her. I took time from work and stayed with her for 6 weeks and am so thankful I did. In a way, I feel like it’s a kind of privilege to care for our parents at end of life, the way they cared for us at the beginning. She’s now at peace, you did all you could to make her final months comfortable, perhaps at the expense of your health. Take some time for yourself, I hope you have some support too. Sending love
