We lost my dad to cancer in April. Up till now mum has been coping, going out, driving, mixing with people and doing every day tasks. This week she’s telling me she doesn’t want to be here, legs feel wobbly, can’t cope. I’ve not really grieved yet as i’m worried about mum. I’ve been to the doc with her, signed her up to talking therapies and a bereavement group. I’m at a loss.
Hi Fe71. Sorry for your loss. I lost my partner Theresa in March, it can take a while for things to sink in, maybe your mum is in shock and trying to block things out, it’s understandable that people feel the way your mum is feeling after losing a loved one. It will be hard for you with losing your father and now watching your mother as well, do you have any more family around you to talk to. I hope your mother starts to feel a bit better. Don’t hesitate to contact your doctor if you think you need to. Take care
Thank you so much.
Hi Fe71 if you read the posts on this site you’ll see that what your mother is feeling is very normal. I certainly had know idea that losing my wife would be so devastating. Spending years with someone you become so close that it’s almost impossible to function without them and anything you found pleasure in before becomes unbearable. I think your mum would benefit by talking to others going through the same situation, which is why people find comfort here. I hope you find she benefits from the bereavement groups you have arranged. Just being there for her is a great help, I’m sure but she is going to need time because most people find the first two or three months the worst but she’ll still be grieving in a year.
Wishing you all the best Tom
