In amongst all the stuff in my loft I have the contents of my parent’s loft which I had to clear when they died.
My dad was stationed in India and Burma during the war. He sent my mum an engagement ring from India. She wore it until their 25th wedding anniversary when he bought her a new ring. The old one had worn thin because it was 22 ct gold next to a 9 ct wedding ring.
It is in a ring box bearing the address of the Indian Jewellery shop. The velvet pad was standing proud of the base so I eased it out. Underneath I found two folded up papers, one was the receipt. The other was the most beautiful, soppiest love letter I have ever read. From my dad to my mum. It was signed the way they always signed cards to each other “Only Forever, Darling”. And they did love each other forever. He died at 83 with cancer, she lived 18 more months before dying of cancer.
Sorry, it made me cry this morning.
Only Forever, Darling. That just about sums it up for me. Xx
