Did anybody try to handle the paperwork without the help of a solicitor? What happens if the value of the estate is insufficient to cover such things as credit card debts etc. I assume they get written off.
It’s a minefield!
Hello @Poll6 ,
I’m so sorry for your lose. Thank you for sharing this with us. I’m just giving your thread a gentle, “bump” for you - hopefully someone will have some thoughts to share.
Take good care,

Hi,
Depends if you were married or not, if married you could be liable for the debt. I would suggest getting in touch with citizens advice who could help you.
If you are not married, debt dies with the deceased. Hope that helps
There should be a lot of information online, I know it is very wearing and tiring, I am getting so sick of dealing with things. We were not married but together for over 20 years yet his mother is officially next of kin and I have to get her signature on things, it is very annoying and makes me wish we had done things differently.
I am trying to sort the mortgage out as the deal we are on is no good…so so tiring and boring luckily there were no other debts but things like work pensions are so difficult, I managed to get one sorted out and now I wish I had left as it is only £35 a month but takes me into the paying tax bracket !!!. Citizens advice and Age UK are very helpful too. just plod on with one thing at a time that’s all we can do. X
