Support for my mum after losing husband

Is there any advice from anyone.
We sadly lost my dad New Year’s Eve last year after a battle with cancer. He was unwell for couple of years but then deteriorated very quickly and after being told that there was no more treatment and he was gone after 5 weeks.

As a family we have all struggled and myself and my sister have tried so hard to be strong and support my mum but it’s so hard when she is so lost without him and says she just wants to be with him again.

She has a great group of friends (some of which have lost partners so have an understanding of her grief) but is there anything else anyone can suggest to help support her with such a huge loss, whilst we are also grieving for our dad.

We’ve thought about grief counselling but would all rather do this individually rather than together so we can focus on our own grief and not be worried for eachother.

Thanks

Hello @LJ9,

Thank you for bravely reaching out. I’m so sorry for the loss of your dad.

When it comes to something as tough as grief, it can be hard to know what to say or do that might help someone you love. Our Grief Kind campaign has lots of resources that can help. You can:

  • Watch our Grief Kind classes. Our Grief Kind classes are five short video tutorials in which Sue Ryder bereavement experts talk you through what grief is like and how you can support others who are grieving
  • Listen to our Grief Kind podcasts. Our Grief Kind podcasts are hosted by author, journalist and Sue Ryder ambassador, Clover Stroud. She speaks with celebrities about their personal experiences of bereavement and the support which helped them most when coping with their grief.
  • Read our guide on supporting someone else who has been bereaved.

I hope that you find these resources helpful. Please take good care of yourself, too - the community is here for you.
