Taking ashes abroad

Hi there.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to take a small amount of my partner’s ashes to Spain please?

There are 2 places that were much loved by us and I would dearly love to sprinkle a tiny amount of his ashes there.

Has anyone done this with their loved one?

Many thanks x

Hi @Plop,

I’m sure someone will be along to share their thoughts. In the meantime, here’s some guidance on the practical side of scattering ashes abroad:

Hi Plop I don’t know anything about transporting ashes from England to Spain. But in Spain which is where I live you have to be careful there are large fines for scattering ashes. That being said I have done it recently and you are risking being caught so you have be careful where and when. I’ve also scattered a very small amount of my wife’s mum. How much is enough and would anyone notice when the amount is small I wouldn’t think it was a problem. But going through customs is another question. Hope you find the answers.

Hello, not specific to spain, but more generally, our funeral director ordered us some certificates to take ashes abroad. they are ‘Certified copy of an entry of cremation’ certificates. i havent scattered yet but planning to. we were advised to hand carry the ashes (don’t check them in) in a “security friendly” scattering tube (i.e. a cardboard or wooden one, no metal) as they still need to go through security, and take a copy of the death certificate and cremation certificate with it. you will also need to check with the airline to see if they have any specifics.

Thank you Tom. The amount would be small but as you say, it’s getting some ashes into the country that will be the main issue. I appreciate your advice.
