Tax

Does anyone know if I need to contact the tax office regarding my partner passing away. He wasn’t self employed so I’m assuming I don’t need to but just thought I would ask. I did ask his employer but all they do is notify the tax office that he no longer works there, not the reason why. Thanks in advance

So sorry to hear of your loss. When I registered my husbands death I was given the choice of them informing all government agencies. Assume this included tax office as he subsequently got tax rebate and I never informed them. Lots of hugs x

Hello @Lorraine.W, I’m so sorry about your partner. I think @Nala is referring to Tell Us Once, which you might find helpful. Tell Us Once is a service that lets you report a death to most government organisations in one go.

Take care,
Seaneen

Sorry to hear your news. Definitely do the ‘Tell us Once’ if you can, but tell them anyway Lorraine - I got a £900 rebate to my wife’s estate.

Thank you we lived in rented accommodation, do you think that makes a difference

No, Lorraine. The tax due for the year (and paid from the monthly salary) would have assumed your partner would work for the full year, equalling out the tax free allowance over that period. So as it won’t now be a full year, they’ll recalculate the tax that is due from 6 April 2024 to his date of passing. That may mean a rebate is due to his estate.

Thank you so much Nigel.
