I wonder if there are any other maleGay people on here. I am 79 and lost my partner of nearly 50 years a year ago. I carry on the best I can and have a reasonable social life but when I home on my own every day I break down. My dear cat needs me, or otherwise I wouldn’t be here now

Hi @Jackthelad ,

I’m part of the Online Community team and I can see that you are new to the community. I’m so sorry to hear about your partner. Most community members have sadly experienced the death of a loved one and so will understand some of what you are going through.

It sounds like you’re looking for support and I’m glad that you’ve been able to talk about how you’re feeling here. We know that a lot of people experience suicidal thoughts when they are grieving. We have a video about it here which you might find helpful:

There is lots of other support out there, and I would really encourage you to reach out and speak to someone about how you are feeling.

  • If these thoughts of suicide become overwhelming, please call 999 or contact your GP for an emergency appointment immediately.

  • Samaritans are available 24/7 to talk about anything that you are worried about in confidence. You can call them on 116 123.

  • Shout are contactable by text, 24/7. You can text REMEDY to 85258 and talk to them about anything.

  • You can also find your local NHS urgent mental health helpline.

Sue Ryder offers an online bereavement counselling service. This is a free service and sessions are held via video chat so you can attend from home. There’s more information about this service here:

You can also make an appointment with your GP and ask to be referred to counselling or other support services in your area.

You deserve care and support so please, get in touch with one of these services.

Take care,

Hi @Jackthelad
Im not gay or male but lost my partner of nearly 50 years, 2 months ago. I completely understand your sense of loss and feeling of no purpose. Thank goodness for animals. Mine keep me going. I can cry in front of them without feeling a failure. They give me something to get up for.
This community is new to me but i am finding it so helpful. Its a relief to know i am normal . Do take care

Sorry, not male or gay, but grieving with you as we all are. We are all walking the same road together and my heart goes out to you, my friend. So sorry for your loss. x

I’m very sorry for your loss, @Jackthelad. You might want to connect with @Marchon, who has also recently lost his partner. You can find his thread here: What do I do now?

I really hope you find the community to be a support to you. Take good care and do think about exploring some of the options @Alex has shared.
