This is a lovely encouraging thread. All the new things we are trying. I found it best to try things which you can do both at home (where we dont need anybody else) but also do in company. Like a ukulele. Ive joined a choir, learnt the flute. Now starting a saxophone. I also bought a posh camera to photograph the insects in my garden. This didnt work well because they didnt sit still long enough. Keep going with new things.

I intend to Helen. I’m going to have a raised flower bed built next Feb, with sleepers etc and will move Jackie’s rose into it and also plant some tulips, which were her favourite flower.
The gardener I intend using said it’s best to do in Oct or Feb, so will wait until Feb as I want to see what the winter will bring.
There is a squirrel that frequents the garden, so will have to watch the blighter
It’s great to learn a musical instrument. I’ve been playing guitar since the late 50s and harmonica since the 60s. When I joined a folk group back in the early 2000s, I bought a mandolin and picked it up quite quick. Never tried a ukulele though. Think it’s a bit too small for my fingers. 
I tried the camera thing, but I was never good at it and seemed to get just as good pics from my iPhone.
My mandolin ‘prowess’ is around 2:04 on this rough demo of one of my songs.
Just go back from a short walk through the nature reserve and up to our local shop for a paper. I wore trainers instead of boots and tripped over a root. Nothing hurt, but my pride and dirty trousers
I moved my little memento from when I ran the New York Marathon in 1996 onto the little sideboard. I went up the towers a couple of days before the race
We must never forget.
I’ll put it back to it’s normal abode tomorrow.

Think I need to do a course on washing.
I wondered why the machine was making a clunking noise.

Jackie was always telling me off for not checking pockets before I washed things.
I left a £5 note years ago but she managed to dry it.
Worst thing was leaving tissues in her trousers. I really got told off for that.

Hi @Johnr . My bowl backed mandolin, was made in Italy about 1910. Far, far too small for my fingers, but it looks nice on the wall. If you play a proper instrument, don’t bother with a ukulele. They are great for making friends and to just get going on a musical journey.
Your little walk looks nice. If, or when, I go base over apex, I look around to make sure nobody saw me

In general, the main thing with starting new things is when the original thought comes into our heads, starting something like - " Shall I do this ?". Dont hesitate and think about it, just tell yourself YES, and take your time exploring the opportunity. If you eventually decide against it, you can change your mind. If we immediately say “NO!” then the opportunity is gone, never to be thought about again, and in 3 years time we can think “I wish I’d done that!!!”
I remember one evening seeing someone play the flute on Youtube (The Moody Blues), then immediately asked about flute teachers on our village facebook site. Within 10 minutes, I’d got my first lesson booked the following day, and bought my first instrument. If I had thought about it, I might have thought “What am I doing? I’m a 76 year old , this is stupid!! I can’t do it, get a triangle!!”. But 2 years later I’m tooting away to myself and enjoying every minute (and every lesson with my delightfully pretty teacher), enjoying playing tunes which I could never have thought possible.

My mandolin was a modern Ozark one. If it had been as old as your one, I would have kept it.
This pic was when I sold it. Never opened the book, which came with the mandolin when I bought it.
First thing I did when I fell over was swear and then look round.
Our sax player plays the flute as well, but he never really wants to play it, preferring sax

I was the same always telling me husband to empty hid pockets .worse thing that got washed was his passport. It was ruined he had to get another one . He started emptying his pockets after that
