Unbearable pain

I lost my partner of 18 years, it will be 2 weeks on Wednesday.

He had been very poorly with type 2 respiratory failure after having covid about 5 years ago, since then he deteriorated, the oxygen machines became bigger, the tanks larger and multiples of them, the time on NIV longer, our lounge became a hospital ward.

The hospital admissions more frequent and for longer.

He fought SO hard, he really couldn’t have fought any harder. We almost lost him a few weeks ago, in the following days he would cry and say how he didn’t want to leave our 13 year old son and me.

Last Wednesday he wasn’t showing anh signs that there was anything different than a usual week day, he would ring my phone at 6.30am so I could help him swap from NIV to oxygen and open the blinds etc at 7.30 I would go to work, usually if he felt unwell he would ask me to let work know I would be late, that didn’t happen that day. He had carers come throughout the day and I only work 8-2.30.

He didn’t answer my msg so I asked my son to check on him who told me he didn’t have an oxygen mask on but had nasal oxygen on, these were only used to eat so I knew they had been on since breakfast. He was also drowsy. I rang the carer who said she would be there in 20 mins. She then rang saying he wasn’t responding, I rang a cab on my way out of work by which time the carer called and said he had come to so I rang him and he said he was OK and was coming round, I told him I was on my way home.

I arrived he was sat up going on a nebuliser then I said to go on the NIV as the drowsiness is due to increase CO2 and this usually removes it. After spending over 2 hours on that his best friend arrives they discuss the England game that night.

He becomes extremely hot and asks me to close the blinds, I go to phone the GP as he looks a tinge of yellow, his friend asks me to come back to check him and he has stopped breathing, I ring 999 and perform cpr which was extremely traumatic.

Paramedics arrive and we lose him.

I have to tell our son who is devastated and feels extremely guilty because he didn’t go to school that day.

I am full of guilt for going to work that day.

I have lost both my parents and grandparents but this is something else.

If I didn’t have children I wouldn’t be here now, I couldn’t have got through the first night. The pain is not just emotional it is physical. I don’t know how to go on without him, just typing that has me sobbing again, I have barely stopped crying. I’m afraid people will start avoiding me as I’m a hysterical mess. When people say are you OK? I say no I’m not, maybe I should say yes I’m fine but I can’t and I’m not, far from it.

I can’t sleep or eat, as I type this it is 4.36am and I have barely slept.

I feel like I am losing my mind.

I can’t see how I can ever get through this unbearable pain.

I miss him so much it hurts.

Hello Toni77, im so sorry for your loss, I know how devastated you must feel right now, ive been there too, everyone here on this site has suffered a great loss. I lost my husband in March after 35 years of marriage, and I miss him so much every single day, I think of him constantly, ..from what I have read here is that some of us feel guilty for having done something or not doing something more for our spouse, ..it is completely out of our hands. Its very early for you, but you will start to feel better, slowly, but you will. Im glad you have a son, you both will need each other, support each other. You will be ok. Please take care, May God bless and comfort you and your son during these very difficult times. :folded_hands::people_hugging::people_hugging:

Dear Toni, it’s breaking heart just to read it, but nobody is saying just comforting words, it’s more than that, we all know and do understand. You can at least lean on your family, I have none. My faith, 2 best friends living 10 000 km from me and this forum is the best I can do to survive. My most beloved husband died last year, I live all alone in a foreign country, all his adopted children are going after my house and I work hard to pay my bills, because there’s no help from a government, because I have no children. I could go on describing my suffering, but we both would be extremely sad and it wouldn’t be good. Just know that we all are here for you whenever you need, helping each other the best we can. This is a blessed place where people always care, even if others don’t. You’re not alone…
Hugs from Janka

Dear Toni77, am so sorry for your loss and what you are going through! I lost my wonderful healthy husband to sudden death 4 months ago - and I was where you are now, in undescribable pain, unable to eat or sleep, not even able to cry at first, just scream. Please try to drink lots of water, if you can go to your GP and ask them to give you something to help you sleep the first few weeks and any bereavement support you can get. It does get a bit more tolerable with time. Slowly as days and weeks go by you will have a moments of peace and calm and the intensity of the pain will be less strong. Please take care, sending you a big hug!

Dear Toni7

I am so so sorry for the loss of your husband and for your son on the loss of his dad.
It’s the most terrible of times and you need each other but for you it’s the gut wrenching ache but also the trying to be strong for your boy and support him
It’s very raw just now and we have all been there in our own way and it’s the worst feeling ever.
I lost my partner 16 months ago suddenly and even though I’ve accepted it and moved forward I tried desperately to fill the void he left until I realised I couldn’t I just had to let the overwhelming sadness n tears come and go as they do.
I didn’t want to get out of bed, I couldn’t eat or sleep, I felt frightened and shook uncontrollably which is definitely not me. The anxiety went through the roof. All of this happed due to the trauma, just be sure to drink enough.
I have been fine for weeks but this morning it’s hit like a speeding train again but now I know it will pass.
It does get easier and one day you realise you haven’t cried and then you might laugh at something and then feel guilt for being just that bit happy. It’s the strangest time I’ve ever gone through and still am but like I say its eased somewhat.
Always remember your husband is with you. You carry him in your heart so he’s everywhere where you are and the same with his and your beloved son.
Keep posting on here it really does help because everyone is going through or has been through what you are now.:heart_hands:

Dear Toni reading your post has brought me to tears. Your terrible situation and the feelings you have of utter devastation, take me back to how I felt when my wife died. My wife had suffered with cancer for two years, fighting to stay with me and doing everything she could to keep going. Even though I knew her outlook was very bleak when she died the pain was unbearable it felt like I was being ripped apart. I never thought anyone could feel so physically ill from the death of another person. What you are going through now is terrible but you have to concentrate on the now, forget the future just survive, look after yourself, take whatever help you can get, ask for help wherever you can. Things get better slowly but they do improve. Being able to post here will help, get things off your chest is important and talking is a form of therapy.:mending_heart::mending_heart::mending_heart:

Wishing you all the strength you will need and sending hugs

Sorry for your loss but what you’re feeling is perfectly acceptable and normal for grief. I lost my partner nine months ago. I couldn’t eat and slept very little in the first couple of months. I also struggled with my memory and concentration, couldn’t hold a conversation without breaking down

Stick with microwave meals or sandwiches, that way no cooking hassles. Gradually your appetite will return and you will sleep a little better. Your GP might be willing to prescribe something in the short term.

Although the initial numbness and confusion passes the grief continues but having reliable family support helps. Don’t worry about other people avoiding you, if they haven’t walked in your shoes they haven’t a clue about how you’re feeling. Keep posting on the site , it really helps. Everyone on here understands. Take care

Sorry my responses are just to say thankyou.

I really appreciate everyone’s kind words.

As I don’t know anyone who has lost a partner I can’t speak with anyone.

The people around me, such as his family have their grief and their own life’s.

I feel so alone and broken, feel like I am burdening people with my heartbreak.

I hate every second of my life.

Dear Toni it’s only two weeks you shouldn’t worry about bothering people and as far as your husband’s family it’s quite possible that some of them may be in need of talking and crying with someone. There is plenty of time in the future to worry about being a burden but now you need all the help you can get. When ever you feel like posting we are here to listen

Wishing you all the strength you will need

All the best

Tom

Dear @Joolswools am so sorry for your loss. You must be in unbearable grief and pain right now. I lost my husband almost 5 months ago and the first two moths, the pain and anxiety were horrible. I just want to let you know that with time there will be moments of calm and the intensity of the pain will not be as bad all the time. Sending you a big hug.

Toni,I am so deeply sorry you are going through this agonising time.

I have lost my soulmate Paul aged 59 ,7 weeks ago in similar devastating circumstances : the oxygen concentrators filling the house with noise and now this silence, the void. You are so right, it is not just the emotional pain but the physical exhaustion , being working carer suffering from a burnout has added to this fight & what a fight it is: Just existing these long empty days & nights.I hate Mondays knowing the long week of nothing ahead.I to have no parents , no grandparents, no sister or daughter but I have a few good friends & a wonderful son although he doesn’t drive or live close by he checks in with me daily. My lifeline.Your children will give you the fight to push through even though you can’t see that now.

Toni, it is hard I am not going to lie, some days I just don’t move, I van spend the day crying ,this week has been particularly hard, I haven’t left the house all week- can’t face it & not got the energy.Even eating is an effort - lost lots of weight .Sleep is hit & miss , if I had known you sooner I was awake at 4:15am this morning.

This is all normal & part of this long grieving process. If you can’t eat please try drink juice , tea - keep a bottle by you.

If I can help to answer any questions you may have or you just want to vent , chat I/we are all here for you/ each other:heart_hands:

Do you have a friend to lean on?

Also your GP may help re: sleep & panic…

Today I am just sitting here , watching TV taking each hour as it comes, so please reach out to me I have a lot of time on my hands and I know , as do others the agony you feel- horrific! :mending_heart:

The pain is the love you feel for your brave husband- that is what I tell myself.

Here if you need to chat.Thinking of you:heart_hands:
